Since 1999

My friends

People who have helped me one way or the other

Gurcharan Singh Sandhu,

A fellow music lover from across the pond

I first learnt about Gurcharan Singh Sandhu of London, UK when I bought the revised edition of the Hindi Film Geet Kosh Volume 3 in 1998. His name was written as the Sahayogi (Associate) on the title page. When I talked to Har Mandir Singh 'Hamraaz' he mentioned that Sandhu Sahib traveled from the UK to Kanpur three times to help with the revised edition. Each time he stayed for a week or more and worked day and night to expedite the publication of that volume.

Later on he and I exchanged emails and then became Facebook and Whatsapp friends. I learnt that we are about the same age and have many common interests. He has been on my A-list ever since. A-listers are people I hold in high regard and to whom I give anything they ask for from my collection, audio, video, books, magazines.

Ali Peter John, often called the 'Dilip Kumar of Film Journalism' passed away on June 8, 2022. He would have been 72 on June 29.

When I was growing up in India, I had read his articles and enjoyed his anecdotes with the leading film personalities. So, I was thrilled when we connected on Whatsapp and Facebook about one year ago. He was a great conversationalist, full of unheard stories. He wanted my help in publishing the second revised editions of his books. I was honored to do so. He will be missed sorely.

From the About the Author Section of his books:

Ali Peter John has had several problems with his name. He does not have a ration card, nor does he have a passport, all because of his odd-sounding name. He is an M. A. in English literature from the Bombay University, but he believes that he has learnt more in the University of Abbas than he has learnt at the university.

He was writing for India's prominent film magazine Screen for forty-eight long years and his column, Ali's Notes, has been accepted as a landmark by the film industry and readers who has been following him. He has written in almost all the newspapers and magazines of India on a variety of subjects about films. He has published twenty books during the last twenty years in his own way. The most prominent book according to him is his autobiography, Life-Bits and Pieces, which had its cover designed by the renowned painter M. F. Husain, the autobiography has also been translated in various languages. His circle of friends includes all the legends and down to Shah Rukh Khan.

He has been living his own simple life without expecting anything from life. He is now writing for a leading Hindi film magazine Mayapuri and at 71, he writes at least two articles every day. He hopes to write till he can no longer write.

I will be publishing a few photos of him later, here is the cover of his last book, cover designed by the famous painter M F Husain.

My First and Only Roommate Shashikant Phatak

Durgadas and Shashikant, Pittsburgh, early 70s

When I showed up at the Physics Department at the University of Pittsburgh on Monday, September 1, 1969, I was handed an exam, a pad and, and a pen. I think I did good. After the exam I met the other 5 new Indians who had arrived earlier. I think I met the couple Amit and Shyamali Sur first. The first question they asked me was where I was staying. I told them, the Downtown YMCA, $6 a day. They immediately found Shashikant, who was looking for a roommate and introduced us. We found an apartment and moved in. Later in the week, he took me to the apartment of his cousin Kishore Saralkar (he was one year senior to us) and I enjoyed home-made Indian food made by Chhaya, Kishore's wife.

We must have changed apartments and houses 5 or 6 times, we may have had other people as roommates, but we were always together!

We divided our chores, he cooked, I cleaned; we cut each others hair (hair cut in a shop was expensive!); I bought a BW TV and a camera (Yashica Minister D), he bought a used car.

We took a tour of the US Southwest, going all the way to the Grand Canyon. Lots of great memories, watch this space.

Recently he had a medical emergency and wrote about it. Sadly he did not make it and passed away on Oct 6, 2024.
