Articles on Hindi Films

As comments on Musing 1087 about M Y Mohan. my cousi from Vancouver pointed out that he had heard a song by him in the sixties. The brilliant sleuthing by Ambrish Sundaram revealed two items.

1. He sang on AIR in July 1951.

2. He apparently added Saigal to his name and used to sing in the meetings of Meher Baba in the sixties-seventies.

Finally, I remembered that I have with the me the comprehensive work on NON-Film Hindi Songs by Raj Dogra. I looked it up. Sure enough, there are 78 rpm records by him!

First ever song in Hindi films was sung by Wazir Mohd Khan in Alamara (1931) and was picturized on him as a faqeer. The picture was remade in 1956 and 1973. He played the same role and and sang the same 2-line song, picturized on himself. Here he is in the 1973 version.

Now You Know!

I had always thought that there was only one actress of that name in Hindi films. The singer with the same name, I thought was different. Yesterday when Vibhenu asked about the singer on the RMIM group, Shefali Gandhi mentioned that the Sabita Chatterjee from Parivar (1956) looked different from Miss Marina in the song from 12 O'Clock. Much discussion went on and many photos were posted. The final conclusion was that the one in Parivar (1956) acted only in that film. It was a different one who acted in many other films. Finally Arunkumar Deshmukh reminded us of an old post of M N Sardana on Facebbok (from 2014) making the same assertions.

I have added  a comment on the Database Website. Here the two ladies.

In Parivar (1956), thanks Pavan Jha.

In 12 O'Clock, thanks Upendra Samaranayake.
