Early Hindi Film Photo Gallery II (G-J)

N Ramaswamy
Professor Surjit Singh

Until recently, the only way to access old newspapers and magazines was to visit their offices, go through many hurdles and answer dozens of questions to actually see the old collections. Mercifully, most had been converted to microfilm for the convenience of the researchers.

Thanks to the advent of the internet and the latest digital technology, quite a few newspapers and magazines have been digitized and are available without visiting the dusty old archives. However, most of the digital collections are available only after paying hefty fees.

There are some silver lines among the clouds. Many big companies like Google and Microsoft have undertaken a massive effort to digitize every available print material and put it on the internet for free. Many world libraries, associations, museums, special collections are doing the same. A huge repository of such items in the Internet Archive.

In the first this book we presented a photo gallery of filmi people from A-F. This book covers G-J.

We had a lot of fun working on them, to capture them and making them suitable for print, organizing them. We hope that you will also enjoy this peek into the early history of the talkies.

But how about many others whose names appear in the film cast and filmographies? This book is an attempt put faces to their names. We have taken 58 films from 1950 and 1951 whose videos are in our collection and captured pictures of the cast and included almost 1,100 pictures, not only big stars but also character artists and junior artists.

Films and Shows in Bombay - 1932

Ajit Sidhu
and
Professor Surjit Singh

A persistent question about Hindi (or Indian) films is when and where was it released? We have to depend on hearsay, I saw it in Minerva first day, first show, or, reviewers would mention the release info, or the newspapers ads would say, coming soon on such and such a date etc. Until now no reliable source had been available.

This project attempts to answer this question once and for all, at least for films released in Bombay. This second book is for the year 1932.

It is based on the daily, later weekly newspaper Bombay Chronicle, available on the Internet Archive. The lead author has looked at each ad in each issue to extract the relevant information in a tabular form. Date, film name, theater name, show times and any other relevant information is captured.

This is, of course, a part of the Master Database Project, and we do hope to gather information from the advent of the Silent cinema to all the available years.

[Note: A similar project on Madras theaters was undertaken by MV Surender and a book has been published. Also another similar book on 1941 by N Ramaswamy has been published.]

Paperback, 6 by 9 in, 146 pages.
