I had suspected but had not known for sure that Times of Indiai newspaper has been digitized. I am happy to report that the archives going back to 1838 and to the current issue are available in many academic libraries. It seems that one does not even need to be associated with a university to access them. I found out about it late Saturday night  and did not get much time. But I managed to get this.

In this song from Wahan (1937) the singer mentions chooDiyaaN and painjaniyaaN and we see them on screen also. To me they sound the same. In any case, this is the earliest song in which I have seen and heard this

All of us have heard or read about income tax raids on film stars, e.g. Manoj Kumar. I don't remember hearing about Lata Mangeshkar's income tax problems. Luckily, there is a website now where you can search for cases all over India by typing any name. On typing Didi's name more than 100 entries show up. But beware, a lot of them refer to people admitted to Lata Mangeshkar Hospital and have nothing to do with her. But, there are plenty of cases involving her. Most of them her suing the Incom Tax depet. or vice versa. Here is an early case. It was a petition to dismiss penalties for filing income taxes late. Nana Palkhivala fought on her behalf. She lost the case as the petition was dismissed!
