As you may have guessed all these photos are of Sulochana (Ruby Myers) in the film Wildcat of Bombay or Bambai Ki Billi (1936).

 

Sulochana said in an interview (Screen, 1951) that she had eight separate roles in this film: a gardener, a policeman, a Hyderabadi gentleman, a street urchin. a European blonde, an old banana-seller and an expert pickpocket who gives her money to charity.

Recent tremendous success of the special-effects-laden of Indian films reminded me of what I had read about such effects during the Parsi Stage Era.

Here is an add for the drama Nal Damayanti describing Eleven special effects and persuading the patrons to come, See?, See?, See?

 Naturally, they would need people to create and produce such effects live on stage during every performance. Luckily, I was able to find a brief bio of one such pioneer, Dinshaw Irani.
