Articles on Hindi Films

We hear many times that these days too many films are being copied from Hollywood. Others say that they were always copied but we are hearing more because the world is more connected. Well, it is true we were always inspired. Even Phalke, the father of Indian cinema, has freely admitted that he was inspired a foreign film. But, did people know about it? My guess is that educated people who saw foreign films always knew. Here is a sample from an issue of Filmfare (August 8, 1952).

inspired

So, are more inspired now? To answer this question, somebody has to produce a list of all the inspired films ever. That has not been done yet.

To day I want to highlight a very special and unique group on Facebook. It is called THOSE WHO COULD NOT MAKE IT BIG BUT IT WAS NOT POSSIBLE WITHOUT THEM. These guys are world experts in identifying the background dancers in group song and various party-goers, wedding attendants, jury members etc, They must have made hundreds of them known to the world. Hats off to them. Here is an example

Shinde, Chinu and Basant in Tarzan Comes to Delhi (1965). Of course, you already know about Shinde if you read my book on Edwina Violette!

In the preface to his book on Junior Artists, Upendra writes,

"Once you start to see these individuals they become like a family, one could always count on to show up in a party or a crowd scene."

After watching hundreds of songs, I also feel like that. But it was not always so.

In the early 90s, I got and saw lots of movies and kept seeing this fat guy, but I had no ides who her was. Lights came on when I saw the credits in Baiju Bawra (1952).
