This is the earliest example when a woman id being coerced to sing and dance on screen. There is a threat of violence actual violence in the form of the bad guy stepping on her foot and she can be seen in pain and her singing reflects it.

I had suspected but had not known for sure that Times of Indiai newspaper has been digitized. I am happy to report that the archives going back to 1838 and to the current issue are available in many academic libraries. It seems that one does not even need to be associated with a university to access them. I found out about it late Saturday night  and did not get much time. But I managed to get this.

In this song from Wahan (1937) the singer mentions chooDiyaaN and painjaniyaaN and we see them on screen also. To me they sound the same. In any case, this is the earliest song in which I have seen and heard this
