So, when was the first dance seen in the movies? In turns out that the answer is the very first feature film, Raja Harishchandra (1913).. The film is easily available and one can check that after half an hour of start, one person starts playing kartaal, he dances and others join in. If you have listened to very early recordings from 1905 or so by Gauhar Jan and others, you couldn't have missed how they say, My name is Gauhar Jan etc. Looks like it was done in filmi songs (and perhaps in the theater songs) too. Here is the earliest example I could find
