Until recently it was very difficult to obtain information about films made in Lahore and certified in the Punjab (before partition). The standard books and references were mostly silent about it. With great difficulty Har Mandir Singh 'Hamraaz' was able to get information about 35 or so films made in Lahore. Then in 1996, Pervez Rahi published a book called Punjab Ki Filmi Tarikh. I obtained a copy of this book thanks to Khwaja Irfan Anwar. It has Information about Silent and Talkie films made in the Punjab before partition. This is a very valuable resource. I believe it is based on film booklets, records, film advertisements and perhaps film magazines. I have been unable to get any of those things at all. I did get some film booklets from late Shahid Pardesi.
Yesterday thanks to the Film Museum Society, Lahore, I was able to see one ad for this film Suhaag Kaa Daan (1936). I thank them very much from the bottom of my heart for providing this information. Here is a summary:
In 1936 J K Nanda, director made this film in Panjab Studios for Taj Pictures.
The writer and dialogue writer of the film was Syed Imtiaz Ali Taj. The music director was Master Ghulam Haider. The actors in this film were Bibbo, Nandi Khanna, Anwari, Hira Lal, Jugal Kishore, Goshti Devaki, G L Madhok. There were some technical flaws in the film, so the entire negative was sent to Bombay. The technical flaws were removed and the film was released in Shanti Cinema on Friday, December 18. The new and beautiful film of the well-known story which will show you the ups and downs of life. You will see all the sorrows, hardships, and happiness of a young girl's life in this movie. This movie is a special gift for you all to enjoy. A story that is very close to our hearts.
