The next few posts are based on the History of Indian Music by Dr Thakur Jayadev Singh (in Hindi) published by Vishwavidyalaya Publications Varanasi (2010)

Rigveda mentions a stringed instrument called vaaN or baaN. Its meaning by SaayaN (well-known commentator) is given as, special kind of veeNaa with 100 strings. The word veeNaa is not found in the Rigveda.

Another instrument dundubhi is mentioned. This was a drum with stretched animal skin. It was played by hitting it with a piece of wood.
